CBD Dog Treats Recipe

Reading TimeReading Time:

Looking to add CBD oil to your dog’s favorite treat or looking for a CBD dog treat recipe that will bow wow your dog’s taste buds? Then you’re like many pet parents who give their dog CBD hemp oil for its range of potential health benefits.

In fact, many of these pet parents take CBD for themselves, and often it’s in the form of CBD edibles, leaving them wondering if they have that option for their furry best friend.

That’s why we’re talking all about CBD dog treats in this article, from what’s in them to how to make your own CBD dog treats.

CBD hemp treats for dogs

What Is CBD?

Taken from the cannabis plant, specifically the hemp variety, CBD (cannabinol) is a non-intoxicating alternative to medical marijuana. Unlike medical marijuana, hemp CBD largely lacks the compound THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which produces the psychotropic effect that defines the high felt from marijuana.

With little to no THC, hemp and products taken from these plants are legal in many places where marijuana isn’t. And this is because, unlike marijuana, hemp is safe for pets and children to consume. After all, there is no high and this eliminates many of the side effects.

However, like medical marijuana, CBD can help with a wide variety of health issues, from reducing anxiety to supporting the inflammatory system to naturally helping the body better manage chronic pain and stress.

CBD Treat Benefits

CBD dog treats have all the benefits that CBD oils and other CBD products have due to them containing CBD oil themselves. In addition, they are delicious, making super fun and easy to give to your pet.

If you’ve taken CBD for yourself before, then you may already have a fair idea of how CBD can benefit your dog and help with a serious medical condition. CBD is commonly taken to help with anxiety, joint pain, epilepsy, sleep (high doses), energy (low doses), and digestive support. One of the greatest ways CBD can potentially help is in its ability to support and bring balance to a weakened or overactive immune system.

Research has so far found that the benefits of CBD for humans are the same for our canines.

Choosing The Correct CBD Oil

To infuse a dog treat with CBD, you’ll need a CBD oil.

When it comes to selecting the right CBD oil to make your CBD dog treats there are few things you’ll want to follow.

First, it’s recommended you use dog CBD oil or CBD oil that’s formulated for pets. This is not a necessity, and you can use a human CBD oil, but you will need to be very careful with the dosage. CBD for people usually contains more CBD to account for our greater body weight, which plays a significant role in determining the appropriate dosage for someone or thing.

When looking for a dog CBD oil, make sure it’s derived from organic hemp and that it comes with a COA (Certificate of Analysis). You should be able to easily find the COA on a CBD company’s website or the CBD oil’s product page.

How Much CBD Should I Put In Dog Treats?

How much CBD oil you will put into your own CBD dog treats recipe will depend on your dog’s body weight. Because CBD oil will affect the consistency of your dog’s treats, it’s a great idea to choose a CBD product that’s formulated for their weight.

This is because your dog’s weight will generally contribute the most to determining the right dosage for them.

At Innovet Pet, we specifically formulate our PurCBD oil for 6 different weight ranges, allowing you to make pinpoint accurate dosages, whatever that may be.

Generally, 1 to 2 milligrams of CBD extract per 10 pounds of body weight is advised — some advised all the way up to 5 milligrams. What’s great about CBD is you can essentially freely experiment with its dosage. It’s essentially impossible for a dog to overdose on CBD. This way you can easily find the best one for your dog, whether that’s a super accurate dose or just one in a general range.

Which CBD Oil Is Right For You?

  • Up to 25 Pounds: 125mg PurCBD+
  • 25 to 50 Pounds: 250mg PurCBD+
  • 50 to 75 Pounds: 750mg PurCBD+
  • 75 to 100 Pounds: 1500lm PurCBD+
  • 100 to 125 Pounds: 3000mg PurCBD+
  • 125 and Up: 6000mg PurCBD+

Choosing The Right CBD Oil Size

If you’re finding that CBD oil is altering the consistency of your treat too much, jumping up into a stronger concentration of CBD is a great idea. And it can save you money! The different concentration sizes and the weight range they are recommended for are not set in stone. They are simply there to make it easier when it comes to how physical oil you administer. For example, you would need to give quite a bit of oil to a 100+ dog if you were using our 125mg best for dogs up to 25lbs. Likewise, our 6000mg CBD is incredibly concentrated, and even a single drop may be more than a toy breed needs.

Can A Dog Overdose On CBD Oil Dog Treats?

While you can give your dog too much CBD, it is extremely unlikely they would experience an overdose from a CBD treat. Especially when care is taken when creating it.

Now, you can give your canine companion too much with common signs including drowsiness, restlessness, and stomach discomfort. Ultimately CBD passes fairly quickly, and your dog will be back to normal within a few hours to potentially overnight.

Research shows CBD is fairly safe even when significantly higher than normal dosages are administered.

How Do You Make CBD Treats And Chews?

Making CBD dog treats and chews can be as easy as dropping the oil onto a treat and letting it soak up the CBD before giving to as complicating as mixing a few ingredients together and throwing them in the oven.

As you can see, it is not hard to make CBD dog treats. And we are here to make it even easier for you!

Buying CBD Oil Dog Treats

Without a doubt, the easiest way to make CBD dog treats is by letting someone else do it for you. Perfect for when you don’t have the time, energy, or skills for baking!

When buying CBD treats, the easiest way is by purchasing them online. And that’s because you want to follow the same rules you do when you’re buying CBD oil.

CBD Dog Treat Recipes

Taking CBD oil and turning it into scrumptious CBD dog treats is a brilliant way to reward your dog with better health and spoil them at the same time. What’s not to love about that?

Depending on your dog’s love or hatred for CBD’s grassy flavor, there are lots of different treat flavor combinations you can pair with CBD. Bitter (turmeric), bold (banana), and fatty (peanut butter) flavors are great for disguising the flavor of CBD. That’s why we made sure to include each in our CBD dog treat recipes below.

But if your dog likes CBD’s hemp flavor, then don’t worry, we have the perfect recipe for them too!

For all the following recipes, a CBD oil will work perfectly for your CBD infusing agent. But if your dog is a fan of peanut butter — and what dog isn’t — then a great way to simplify things is by eliminating one of the ingredients in your recipe. You can easily do this by trying Innovet Pet’s Peanut Butter-Infused CBD, Nutty Hemp.

Peanut Butter, Pumpkin, & Oatmeal Hard Treats

Give your dog a treat perfect for the cooler seasons with tasty and healthy peanut butter, pumpkin, and oatmeal CBD treats. Rich in everything from fiber to b vitamins to biotin, these treats are a delight for your dog’s health. As a bonus, you’ll likely have everything you need already in your house.

Ingredients:

Directions:

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 2: Blend oats in a food processor or blender until fine but not powdery — blend less for fun chunky treats!

Step 3: Combine peanut butter, pumpkin, and oats together and work into a dough that’s relatively sticky, but workable.

Step 4: Lightly flour a surface to roll your dough out onto until it’s thin but not breaking apart.

Step 5: Divide dough evenly by cutting it into equal squares — use a cookie cutter for an even more fun treat!

Step 6: Place uncooked CBD dog treats on a non-stick baking sheet or a parchment-lined pan, spacing treats evenly.

Step 7: Place oven-safe tray in oven and bake for 20 to 30 minutes or until the CBD dog treats are hard and fully dry.

Step 8. Store in an airtight container.

Sweet Potato, Coconut oil, & Turmeric Hard Treats

With a healthy sweetness that dogs love and a tangy bite rich that’s fun for your dog and greatly masked CBD’s flavor, these turmeric CBD dog treats are perfect for the picky eaters. Plus, both sweet potato and turmeric have their own therapeutic benefits, including immune and digestive support. Combining sweet potato, CBD, and turmeric together is a great way to boost your treats’ anti-inflammatory properties.

Ingredients:

  • 1 to 2 Sweet Potatoes (3/4 pumpkin puree works as well)
  • 2 TBSP coconut oil or hemp cooking oil, softened or warmed
  • Sprinkle of turmeric
  • A pinch of black pepper (helps your dog absorb the turmeric better)
  • ⅓ - ½ cup coconut or whole wheat flour
  • CBD oil

Directions:

Step 1: Mash sweet potatoes into a puree while blending in spices.

Step 2: Slowly blend the flour into the sweet potato mash spice mixture until it becomes a pliable but sticky dough — amounts may vary depending on the moisture content of the sweet potatoes.

Step 3: Combine all oils together. *use hemp seed oil its healthy fats vs. coconut oil

Step 4: Roll dough out on a lightly floured surface and add oil mixture.

Step 5: Divide dough evenly by cutting it into equal size pieces.

Step 6: Place uncooked CBD treats on a non-stick baking pan or a parchment-lined sheet, spacing treats evenly.

Step 7: Place oven-safe tray in oven and bake for 20 to 30 minutes or until baked dog treats are hard and fully dry.

Step 8: Store in an airtight container

Peanut Butter & Banana Ice Cream

Is your dog a rock n roller that likes to get down with the King? Then give them a treat that Elvis would truly be proud of. And don’t worry, with how delicious these treats are, you can skip the bacon i.e. hog it all for yourself.

Remember, you can cut out the middleman and use peanut butter that already features hemp instead of adding CBD oil. This makes this already simple recipe even easier to make! If you’re looking for a no bake recipe, you’ll love these homemade CBD treats.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup peanut butter
  • 4 soft bananas
  • CBD oil (skip this ingredient with Nutty Hemp)
  • Rolled Oats (optional)

Directions:

Step 1: Peel and slice bananas either before or after freezing for 6 hours or until fully frozen.

Step 2: Remove frozen bananas from the freezer and mash until an ice cream-like consistency is achieved — a food processor can greatly assist with this.

Step 3: Add peanut butter and CBD oil or just Nutty Hemp into the canna ice cream.

Step 4: Serve

No-Bake Blueberry & Hemp Oil Frozen Dog Treats

Blueberries and hemp oil are a great way to get started making CBD dog treats when you’re unsure about dividing a single dosage up amongst several treats. That’s because we used molds or ice trays for this recipe.

Not only does this mean you can simply put your dog’s regular dosage in a single treat, you easily create a tray of treats featuring different dosages. Perfect if you have multiple dogs or frequently change your dog’s dosage.

Even better, no baking is required with these tasty frozen no bake treats!

Ingredients:

  • Frozen Blueberries
  • ½ cup Hemp oil (coconut oil works well too)

Directions:

Step 1: Grab a mold with several insertions or an ice tray big enough to hold a single blueberry with additional room for both the CBD and hemp oil.

Step 2: Place a single frozen blueberry into each opening, then fill with hemp or coconut oil nearly to the brim, leaving room for the desired amount of CBD oil needed for each treat.

Step 3: Depending on the desired dosage, each treat can feature a differing amount of hemp to CBD oil if desired.

Step 4: Place mold or ice cube tray into the freezer until fully frozen.

Step 5: Serve these delicious cold treats.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can You Bake CBD Into Dog Treats?

Adding CBD oil to your own treats before baking them is a great way to infuse the therapeutic benefits of CBD into your dog’s favorite treat without significantly changing up the flavor of the treat.

When baking, cooking, or just adding heat to CBD, you need to be careful not to apply too high of a heat for too long. When baking with CBD, it’s advised, you don’t go over 350 degrees Fahrenheit to avoid boiling off the beneficial compounds.

Now, almost all of the compounds in cannabis have lower boiling points, with many being lost when temperatures start surpassing 250-300 degrees Fahrenheit. Fortunately, when baking CBD into treats or another food idea, the food becomes a shell that protects the cannabinoids and terpenes — up to a certain point, that is! Fortunately, most baking temps don’t reach that point.

Can You Freeze CBD Oil Dog Treats?

Summer temperatures everywhere are downright sweltering!

One of our favorite ways to help our dogs cool down in the summer is by giving frozen treats. And CBD dog treats are the perfect candidate for the freezer.

Freezing CBD is often considered the best way to store a CBD product long-term — the refrigerator is great as well.

There is some concern that freezing, thawing, refreezing, thawing again, and on it goes could degrade some of the cannabinoids and terpenes if done too often. This is why CBD dog treats are actually the best options for the freezer since you can easily pull one treat out at a time. For CBD oil, the refrigerator is your better option.
