What is CBD oil for horses?
CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is an oil that is extracted from certain strains of cannabis plants, more specifically, the hemp variety. CBD oil is rich with therapeutic compounds, which is why CBD is becoming increasingly popular as an alternative supplement for many mammals. Dogs, cats, horses, and people are amongst the most popular users of CBD.
CBD is derived from Cannabis Sativa L plants — an umbrella term that includes both hemp and marijuana plants. While called CBD, the heavy majority of CBD products contain the full range of compounds found in cannabis, which includes cannabinoids like CBD as well as other beneficial compounds like terpenes and flavonoids.
CBD is largely derived from hemp plants because unlike its cousin, marijuana, hemp lacks high amounts of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) which gives marijuana its signature high and psychoactive effects. How Can CBD Oil Help my Horse?
Hemp CBD has opened up a new world in the way we can care for and support our horses’ health. Whether that’s using CBD as an anxiety aid to help calm occasional anxiousness or using CBD to support their mobility and joint function. CBD can offer support to all horses in some way. In our two decades in animal health and wellness, we’ve never seen anything quite as unique and special as hemp CBD. It’s given many horse owners the ability to care for their horses without having to worry about the side effects that can come from prescription medications.
The Endocannabinoid System
CBD offers one of the major keys to long-term wellness. And that’s by taking care of it on a day-to-day basis by promoting inward balance and functional health. And it does this naturally by supplementing the ever-important endocannabinoid system. We created CBD oil for horses because we saw how Hemp CBD helped our fur children and knew we had to tell pet owners everywhere about this amazing plant.
The way that CBD works and scientifically affects your horse is through a system that all mammals have and is known as the endocannabinoid system (ECS). This system, composed of cannabinoid receptors and self-created cannabinoids, is responsible for keeping nearly all other vital systems in the body functioning normally. Whether it's the cardiovascular system, immune system, central nervous system, digestive system, respiratory system, etc., they all rely on the ECS.
The way this specifically works is that there are certain receptors that the cannabinoids attach to that located in cells. These receptors can be activated naturally or by supplementing with CBD Oil.
By using hemp extracted CBD, we are removing the chance of THC, which is the psychoactive compound in cannabis, from overstimulating cannabinoid receptors which produces a high. Knowing this, we may positively and naturally influence the ECS by supplementing CBD Oil.
When properly created, CBD Oils are safe for mammals, but there are ways in which we can improve the likelihood of their effectiveness, like making sure that the source from which it is coming is top-notch. One factor that can make a world of difference is the type of cannabis plant the manufacturer uses to extract their oil from when creating CBD products for horses. There are two notable plants that are used for CBD extraction: hemp and marijuana.
CBD Derived From The Hemp Plant
The hemp plant contains much lower traces of THC, which is the psychoactive ingredient. THC needs to be filtered out in order to legally sell CBD online. So if you go with a higher quality hemp plant from the beginning, it will allow for a more effective and clean product.
Rethinking The Cannabis Plant
The major misconception that causes people to question CBD oil's legality is the fact that it comes from cannabis plants that are associated with marijuana. All strains of cannabis plants have different ratios that play a role in their legality. When there are high amounts of THC in the mix, it is considered to be an illegal substance because this is what gives marijuana plants their ability to cause a high. When the plants are bred to have a large amount of CBD and virtually no THC, it is legal. This is why we only use the highest quality Hemp Extracts in order to make our products.
Buying Legal CBD For Horses
Federally, in the U.S., CBD products that contain no more than 0.3% THC by volume are legal. However, state regulations from products derived from the cannabis plant can look different, so make sure to check your local laws.
We've mentioned before that we prefer CBD oils because they make administering precise dosages effortless, and it's the easiest way to find out how much CBD a horse needs. Remember, all horses are unique, and this, along with the severity of their condition, can greatly affect the amount of CBD you should give them.
Fortunately, it's not a complete guessing game, as your horse's weight will give you a dosage you can start with. There is no unsafe amount of CBD you can give your horse, but we've found that lower and medium dosages are often all that's needed, and they don't risk making your horse tired like high dosages can.
We break individual/single CBD dosages into three tiers based on the horse's weight, and each has its advantages.
Low Tier Single Dose (0.009 mg/lb or 0.02 mg/kg):
This is where we recommend you start, and you can keep your horse here while CBD builds up in their system, which takes a week or two. If using CBD for preventative health or overall wellness, this is a great dosage range to stay in.
Average Tier Single Dose (0.041 mg/lb or 0.09 mg/kg):
By the name, you can guess that this is the most popular dosage as it typically helps with most conditions without generating notable side effects.
Strong Tier Single Dose (0.228 mg/lb or 0.5 mg/kg):
Our CBD Oil for horses comes in two concentration sizes, so it's just as easy to give a precise dosage to a pony as it is to a draft horse. Our 750mg is suited to smaller horses and ponies, while our 1500mg is better for larger horses that require more CBD. Same great CBD tincture, one just has more CBD.
Published in the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science, researchers conclude that oral administration of CBD at doses up to 3 mg/kg is well tolerated in horses and that prolonged administration for up to 6 weeks does not produce any permanent biochemical abnormalities.
CBD has taken the health world by storm. One reason is the long list of health issues it can help with. The other reason is CBD's lack of side effects. There is a significant and growing body of research that shows CBD hemp extract can replace many conventional medications that come with harsh side effects. In most cases, side effects are never seen with CBD.
In the rare cases when side effects are seen, they are fairly mild, e.g., nausea and tiredness with high dosages (completely harmless). There is only one major side effect to pay attention to, and that is CBD's ability to interfere with certain drugs metabolized in the liver. If your horse is on such a drug, we advise you to talk to your veterinarian about CBD before using it. This interaction is not uncommon as foods such as grapefruit and kale do the same.
Animals such as horses are often sensitive to essential oils, so make sure you avoid CBD products that contain artificial ingredients or harmful oils.

Extraction Method:

We are very pleased with Innovet's PURCBD products. Our dog, Willy (age 11, 18lbs) was diagnosed with anal gland cancer in the fall of 2019. We immediately began giving him the lower dose CBD but worked our way up to the level 5 bottle. While this has not cured him, we feel it has slowed the progression of his cancer and given us more time. This product has helped with his anxiety during fireworks season as well. My elderly (and arthritic) English Mastiff is currently on a mix of truprofen, gabapentin and CBD oil. Like a three legged stool, remove one of those medications and he has a hard time getting to his feet. Truprofen has a upper limit for dosage, which he has reached so I’m pleased that a combination approach is working. I know for sure that the CBD is effective, having tried just the other two alone. BTW it took 3-4 days to start seeing a result. I like the oil preparation, which I add to his kibble. I’m including a pix of dog - with CBD bottle for scale.
